A man was beaten to death by a mob in South Dum Dum’s Pramodnagar area after allegedly attacking a youth and attempting to gouge out his eye. The deceased, identified as Gokul Mandal, was accused of assaulting 40-year-old Pradip Sarkar, who was reportedly intoxicated when he lost balance and fell in front of his house on Wednesday morning. A scuffle broke out, during which Gokul allegedly sat on Pradip’s chest, tried to gouge out his eye, and forcibly took him inside his house. Locals gathered upon hearing the commotion and attacked Gokul.
Gokul Mandal sustained severe injuries as the mob turned violent. He was first taken to Dum Dum Hospital in critical condition before being shifted to RG Kar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Meanwhile, Pradip Sarkar suffered serious injuries to his eye and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Authorities are investigating the exact sequence of events, including what led to the altercation. Officials are also looking into whether prior conflicts were involved in the incident.
Police have begun questioning eyewitnesses and examining CCTV footage from the area. No arrests have been made so far, but authorities have increased security in Pramodnagar to prevent further unrest. A forensic team has also been deployed to collect evidence from the scene.
